In the Details

Lilly Asano ‘27

With our backs to Pikes Peak and silver suburban overflowing with sleeping bags, groceries, and various pieces of our lives, my friends and I embarked on our first Block Break to Kremmling for four days of camping.

However, deep in Gore Canyon, the exhaustion and rush of my first block caught up to me, and my mind reeled over how drained I felt. I was terrified I wouldn’t find my place at CC, terrified I was too far from home.

When I sat down to edit my photos from Block Break, my homesickness frustrated me, yet each picture brought a new realization: home doesn’t have to be a place, it can be the smallest things.

Home is Pilar’s quesadillas, Emmy’s watercolor palette, Noah’s snacks, and Reed’s camera. Home is hiking behind Tomas for 8 miles and watching Sof navigate new terrain. It’s Ben’s laugh, Kala’s jokes, and Sophia’s compassion. Home is beginning to let go of the perfection I’ve chased my whole life. Home is welcoming new beginnings.

Home is in the little details, and I know I’ll find it here.

Gore Canyon area was known to the Ute people as Naa Ohn Kara - where blue water meets the sky.

Images were taken on the indigenous land of the Ute People.
